David Mitchell Architects is a Sydney based practice centered on innovative design and quality execution, with a client focus and extensive understanding of the building process. Directors, David Mitchell and Kat Burns started the practice in 2013 and demonstrate unique specialties in design, art and architecture, creating dynamic and thought provoking spaces that respond to both external and internal influences.
Consideration of light, ventilation and materiality isn’t confined to the office. There isn’t a moment when their lives aren’t influenced by space, constructed or natural and, if they’re receptive to it, nature will guide passive design and sustainable methods that lower cost, increase longevity and embody individuality in a bespoke building informed by its functionality.
DAVID MITCHELL
David grew up in Sydney. When he wasn’t catching lightening quick bowls or barrel waves, the built world was his playground. He gained his degree in Architecture at UNSW, working for an award winning practice for several years before breaking off to start his own firm, David Mitchell Architects with partner in business and life, Kat Burns. David picked up recognition for his first owner/builder residential project, the Waterloo Terrace, setting the standard for the quality of architecture the company stands for. When David and Kat aren’t juggling family life and business, they are travelling to various corners of the earth to fill their cups with architectural and cultural inspiration to bring home for slow digestion and enriched design. If there’s a problem, David can solve it.
KAT BURNS
Kat is a Kiwi, transplanted to Sydney from Wellington over 10 years ago. She is an artist by nature and what computers produce today in the creative world, Kat once made by hand. One of the last generations to learn architecture with a pencil, Kat gained her Architecture degree from Auckland and Wellington Universities. Architecture has only been one of many creative expressions for Kat amidst paintings of cityscapes, hand generated graphic designs, interior design, and whatever else she’s feeling. A mother of four, and the glue that holds it all together, she has strong vision and a clear moral compass.
